natoriamido_20121112 (3).jpgSome survivors are living at temporary shelters and others keep staying at their damaged houses in the tsunami affected areas now. Some others are living at municipal housing, so-called deemed temporary shelters. Habitat Japan has launched a new operation to install window screens at municipal housing in Natori, Miyagi. These apartment complexes are very old, built in the 70's and they did not have even screens. Since the disaster, due to the lack of temporary shelters, the survivors started living in these apartment complexes even under tough conditions. However, there are many restrictions of municipal housing, these apartment complexes were out of major disaster relief aid.
Mr. and Mrs. Tastumi and Chieko Otomo were one couple living in Medeshima municipal housing. "We simply could not open the window because there was no screen and flies were coming into the room," they said. Like Mr. and Mrs. Otomo, many residents there had the same problem and they also started thinking that they were neglected compared to people at temporary shelters that receive continous support. Finally this August, with the request from the Reconstruction Agency of the Japanese government, Habitat Japan started assessment with Japan Platform, Habitat Japan's long time institutional donor.
natoriamido_20121112 (1).jpgBefore the assessment, Habitat Japan planned to purchase and install screens to each window and did not expect any major construction work. However, because of the old building, the complex did not even have additional window tracks for screens, so they had to be installed first. On the 3rd day of the operation in Medeshima municipal housing, the installation of all 75 screens was completed. Not to mention that many residents also actively joined the work with Habitat's volunteers. Mr. Otomo said looking at his newly installed screen, "This screen also can be used as window shades so they are really useful during all seasons."
