Habitat Japan built 5 bus stop shelters in Iwate and Miyagi Prefectures this October and through November.
In Asai District, Higashimatsushima, Miyagi, approximately 15 elementary and junior high school students commute to school by bus because their local schools were now closed after the disaster. The students had to wait at the roadside early in the morning. Their parents and the locals were concerned of safety; they wanted to have a bus stop shelter especially before the coming winter.
Habitat responded and volunteers came to help build the bus stop shelter. A parent from Asai District said, "I am excited to see this bus stop shelter being built up each day. My child could hardly wait to see the newly built shelter." This bus stop shelter is also used by the local kindergarten pupils to wait for a school bus and also by the locals as a new gathering spot.
Meanwhile in Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture, 4 bus stop shelters were built this November. 103 students from Akasaki Elementary School are also forced to travel to another elementary school 5 kilometers away. Some bus stops were still surrounded by debris and others were standing in the middle of nowhere. Habitat Japan collaborating with the locals and other NPOs, got involved in the entire operation of building bus stop shelters in the area.
On the last day of the operation, the students who use the bus stop shelters and their parents painted pictures on the walls. Thanks to this local involvement, 4 bus stop shelters were completed before the severe winter started.
A few days later, Habitat Japan received a thank-you message (photo:right) and a pleasant drawing of bus stop shelter and rainbow from the students; "Thank you Habitat! We enjoyed building the bus stop shelters by ourselves that we are using now!"
