Donate and Volunteer to Help Japan Rebuild!

On September 28-29 and October 5-6, Habitat Japan built a communal storage unit and bench-like steps at Konakai Temporary Shelter Complex in Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture, where 27 families reside.

Some residents said, "We should give a special name for this storage," so they named it 'Nishi no Kura(Storage of the West)' because the storage will be moved to the 'Nishi'-date Community Center, which plans to rebuild in the future.

tohoku_ofunato_2012092829_NissanteamA (9).jpgMeanwhile, Konakai Complex had another problem. There is a certain height from the foundation to the window that has a laundry pole. Especially for the elderly, they step on the window track every time they hang the laundry and they needed something they can step on safely. Mr. Muneo Oikawa, a leader of Konakai Complex said, "Thank you very much for making the wonderful steps for every family. These steps are safe as children step on with their barefoot and they also stand still as the elderly use to hang out the laundry."

Total of 52 volunteers in 2 teams worked at Konakai Complex were from Nissan Motor Co. and they joined volunteering as a part of Habitat's global partnership. It is the first time for Nissan to join Habitat Japan's domestic volunteer trip and 2 more teams are coming to Ofunato this year.
