20120803ofunato_1.jpgThe storage building project has been pursued to provide residents at boxy temporary shelters since May in Ofunato, Iwate. We have finished building and setting of storages for 40 families with nearly 100 volunteers and carpenters from both all over Japan and local areas.
The series of work were done within the proxies of temporary shelter complex, and the volunteers stayed at vacant rooms in some cases. This led to a various kinds of communication, such as playing with kids between intervals of work and talking to elders.
20120803ofunato_2.jpgOn the occasion of project completion, adorable gift was sent from "Menkoi Club" (Menkoi means "cute" in Tohoku dialect") of which the members are ladies over 75 years old. The gift was hand-made skirt-shaped towels with races and collars, which shows warm and detailed handworks.
"Menkoi Club" members hand-make these skirt-shaped towels one by one. Habitat Japan sends these towels to volunteers who worked at Odachi and met these ladies. Bonds so strong that continues even after the project was completed, and it shows how much difference volunteers can make in these people's lives.
