Donate and Volunteer to Help Japan Rebuild!
Rikuzentakata, a city next to Ofunato had the largest tsunami damage in Iwate. The Rikuzentakata Public Library was the only public library in the city, and the building was fully destroyed and all books and library materials were washed away.
In spite of growing calls for rebuilding this public library, the city had to wait for another 10 years prioritizing other reconstruction projects. To respond to the locals needs, some NPOs rose up to rebuild the library. Some donated books and others helped to rebuild the library building.
Habitat Japan joined this effort by building to install tables and eaves outside so that the visitors can enjoy reading out of a limited temporary reading room.
Kenji Kin, a janitor of the library, said, "The twin disaster tore us apart and we were about to lose the community tie we had build. We wanted not only a library but also a place we can get together and relax. Reading books, talking with friends, children playing outside... these connections are being rebuilt at this temporary library now."
Habitat Volunteers who joined the work were English teachers from Canada and the US, and also Habitat Campus Chapter members. Enjoying cross-cultural exchange, volunteers lifted up a 6-meter-wide joist and attached it to the roof as sitting on ladders. Yu Higashiya, one of Campus Chapter volunteers said, "I enjoyed volunteering and also felt proud of myself to join the work!"
