20140320Haiyan(6).jpgTyphoon Haiyan (Yolanda) destroyed or damaged the homes of more than 1.1 million families as it swept across the Philippines on the 8th November 2013. Just three weeks earlier a magnitude 7.2 earthquake destroyed or damaged the homes of almost 80,000 families in the nearby island of Bohol. Through its ReBuild Philippines program, Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) has already provided shelter assistance to more than 12,000 families following these two disasters. This is just the start of a long-term commitment to support more families over the next three years.
< What Habitat has been doing >
Catalyzing self-recovery
Enabling the self-recovery of affected families, Habitat has been aiming to distribute 30,000 shelter repair kits. Also Habitat plans to deploy Habitat Mobile Emergency Response units containing tools and equipment to provide support for debris removal, material salvage and household repairs.
Rebuilding homes
Prior to typhoon Haiyan many affected families lived within 40m of the coast in what have now been declared 'no-build zones' by the Philippines government. Habitat is currently working with both Local Government Units and the National Housing Association to identify sites for relocation and rebuild 30,000 permanent homes for these families.
Rebuilding communities
Habitat is also committed to the repair or reconstruction of schools, health centers and community facilities such as libraries, community halls and day care centers. The organization's building activities are complimented by a range of social and economic development programs with the aim of creating child-friendly, safe and resilient, clean and green, empowered and sustainable communities in partnership with specialist organizations in each field.
