Donate and Volunteer to Help Japan Rebuild!
Habitat for Humanity Japan (HFHJ) completed the repair of Kawakudari Community Center in Higashi Matsushima city, Miyagi Prefecture, in cooperation with the local government.
The local government officials and the community leaders attended the dedication ceremony along with the local residents and carpenters who worked on the repairs. The HFHJ volunteers were also invited.
The locals were now able to use the repaired kitchen in which they prepared very nice traditional meal for the ceremony. Many people said they were grateful to HFHJ and happy that they could use the community center again.
After the dedication ceremony, the HFHJ volunteers were in action again. Together with the local people, they made benches for this community center. While working, young volunteers were contemplating who would be using these benches. When they finished the work, they faces were full of big smiles.
The Kawakudari Community Centre repair project is a part of the community rebuilding initiative of HFHJ. The community center was seriously damaged by the Tsunami which followed the Great East Japan Earthquake. Even though the building sustained a heavy damage and its condition was terrible, the community center was used as an evacuation center. Many local people had no other choice than to stay there for weeks after their houses were lost or damaged.
Thanks to the wonderful work of volunteers and the local partners, this community center was repaired. People of Kawakudari can again make use of the community center for gatherings and events. It also continues to serve the local community as a registered evacuation center in case of emergency.
