Habitat for Humanity Japan has assisted repairs of more than 30 houses in Higashi Matsushima, Miyagi prefecture, damaged by the tsunami and the earthquake.
The focus of the project is to support homeowners who are faced with both economic and social difficulties in repairing their own homes. The staff visited and interviewed every applicant to make a list of necessary repairs. Assisting architects then visit the houses to assess the scope of damages from their technical perspective.
Even more than two years after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, filthy mud and sludge are still found under the floor boards of houses in the affected areas, creating various problems and health hazards for the people living in them. Some families are still living in houses with walls partially collapsed by the aftershocks of the disaster.
Mrs Orgata, was one of the homeowners assisted by Habitat for Humanity Japan. Like so many other victims, she had numerous parts of her home in need of repairs. She was at a loss, as many of these essential repairs would not be covered by the subsidies and supports offered by the government.
For example, Mrs Ogata had no other choice than to continue using her completely unsanitary kitchen in which rats could enter freely through a hole in the wall created by the tsunami. She was distraught that her family had to live in such conditions for nearly two years before they received the assistance. She was incredibly grateful to Habitat for Humanity Japan for making her feel like she had her life back in a finally safe and secure home.
The project is in progress and the repairs to the selected houses are scheduled to be completed by the end of October 2013.
