Donate to Help Japan Rebuild!
Habitat Japan has started to distribute flyers about the ongoing rehabilitation program in Ofunato city, by making door-to-door visits.
Up to now, the announcement of this program was done by means of local media, as well as by distributing flyers in the local shops and community centers. However, we came to realize there are people who have little chance to come across this information, but who are in need of the support and who are only to be found with the steady efforts.
The flyers were distributed from March 4th to 6th by 7 volunteers, 3 of whom were members of Habitat Japan's Campus Chapter. Total of 226 families were visited in the Massaki and Akasaki areas where the housing damage was the most severe and therefore thought to be in need of support. As a result of detailed explanation offered door-to-door, 20 new families were listed as potential applicants. Also, Through such face-to-face communications, the affected families shared their feelings with the volunteers. We have learnt making such visits are good opportunity to understand the needs and shifting public opinion.
Further distribution to 350 families in total is in the planning stage. Town council and the temporary housing assistants supported distribution this time, and Habitat Japan is also seeking the ways of spread word through the local network.
