東北45.jpgHabitat Japan has been distributing winter items to 1,338 families who had moved to rented apartments or houses.
Houses of these families have been damaged and they had to find apartments to move in by themselves. They register it to the municipal government so that they can get supports. It sounds that things are easier for them as they live in their own comfortable places but it is also hard to come back to the lives they used to have. What they used to have were washed away or damaged by tsunami. They have to buy everything once again, and also have to pay house rent.
However since they are recognized as householders, in many cases, very little assistance had been given by government. Last September Habitat Japan started the distribution of home starter kits to the families living in temporary shelters, but also noticed that it is hard for the families who have found their places by themselves to reach relief items. The idea of this distribution initiative has been shaped by going through discussions with the municipal government of Higashimatsushima, which has also noticed the situation.
In December 2011, Habitat Japan has sent application sheets for winter items to these families. 1,338 families in such situation have applied and selected 2 items out of 5 which include kotatsu (Japanese traditional table with heater), kotatsu blanket, heater, electric hot carpet and electric hot blanket. Distribution has started with the family who applied first.

Habitat Japan is continuously working with the affected families by providing help and supporting to their urgent needs.
