Nearly 14,000 young volunteers built homes in seven Asian countries on April 27, signaling their commitment to tackling the poverty housing situation in the region where one in eight lives in slums, according to the United Nations. The event set a record for non-profit housing organization Habitat for Humanity as its largest ever youth volunteer build event in Asia. From all over Japan, 34 students visited Higashimatsushima, Miyagi Prefecture to join disaster relief work.
"34 members from Hiroshima, Osaka, Kyoto, Shizuoka and Tokyo worked at Kibo no Akari (Light of Hope) temporary shopping street that are opening with a marquee and several prefab units for community revitalization. Habitat Japan helps the locals and the shop owners with building the marquee and making benches and tables and YB Japan team joined making benches and tables this time.
A volunteer from Kwansai University, Masamitsu Iio (19) said, "What great about volunteering is not only serving the society but also making friends. I never met most of team members before the trip but I have already enjoyed working with them. Working together, learning together, this is how we YouthBUILD!"
