September 15th, Japan Hope Builders09-2 returned home safely from 8 days of work in Bangkok, Thailand (*1). As the second batch of this summer's Japan Hope Builders, this team was consisted of various participants from Okinawa to Hokkaido. Despite the sunny and very hot four days of work, everyone could complete the trip safe and sound with no accident what so ever.

First day, as soon as the team started to relay the buckets for filling the foundation with concrete, the ice was broken at once to bring everyone together. All of us were enjoying working together so much; the team work accelerated the speed. It even amazed the local skilled workers and carpenters; they had to force us to slow down!
Day two was all about cultural exchange. The team visited an elementary school located 20 minutes away from the work site. The children in groups took turns to perform songs and dance on stage, the team played games and origami with the kids. Though we didn't speak the same languages, the time flew by and we were all smiling and having a great time.

The third day and on, we proceeded with mixing cement, building brick walls and digging ground hole for a toilet. After four days of hard work, we managed to complete the frame of the house including the four walls, foundation and the roof. The house will be fully completed by the professionals such as electrician and plumbers in a few weeks time.
On the last day of work, we have completed the finish of interior and exterior walls. In the afternoon, we celebrated the new beginning with the homeowner at house dedication ceremony. After the tape cut at the entrance of the new house, we continued with the farewell party with cooking Yakitori.

The next batch of Japan Hope Builders is scheduled for Spring 2010. Here, Habitat's Global Village program made easy for individuals and small groups. Stay tuned to learn more about it and save your seat in this one of a kind adventure!
