Habitat for Humanity Japan has determined that it started volunteer operations, which includes minor residential renovation and cleaning support for the socially vulnerable such as elders living alone. A pilot project got implemented with two volunteers participating on December 15, 2007.
This time, our partner is Mrs. S, 79 years old and living alone with her cans in Nakano, where HFHJ office is located.
Mrs. S has been suffered from heart disease for 3 years, and she has difficulties to do household chores. This time, she requested us to bring her wardrobes from ground floor to upstairs where she spends most of the day.
The two volunteers for this heavy workload were, Mr.Sho Nittono from Meiji Gakuin Campus Chapter, and Mr.Yu Kawahara who is working in Tokyo, and has known Habitat for Humanity very recently. Mr.Nittono has studied similar cases of community service in his university, and Mr.Kawahara is vastly-experienced with carrying furnishings from his past part time jobs at moving companies.
Mrs.S was very cheerful and entertained us with her interesting stories during the operation. Both Mr.Nittono and Mr.Kawahara deftly carried the huge wardrobes. Unfortunately, one of the wardrobes was bigger than the corridor and stairs so that we couldn’t carry it to upstairs. However, we assure our continue supports to Mrs.S.
Moreover, in selecting the home of this operation, we had worked with a care support professional at the Higashi-Nakano Area-Comprehensive Support Center which is entrusted by the city of Nakano-ku with elder welfare activities.
HFHJ would like to expand the network of volunteering activities in association with the Area-Comprehensive Support Center. We would greatly appreciate everyone’s active involvement with us.
