Late April, we held reassessment in at Mammunai West, East Batticaloa since the needs of victims seems to be changing after 3months from flood disaster. In addition to a survey with the survivor families, through arrangement with local government and authorities, it was clarified that increasing needs for transitional period.
At first, we planned to distribute shelter kits with roof material sheets, nails and candles, which could be used to get a minimum living space for families that lost their home by the disaster. However, based on the reassessment, it is decided to provide shelter kits with greater amount of materials for some families, which can be used for house construction in the future. Wood to strengthen the roof, for walls, concrete posts were added to the originally planned contents.
Including this upgrades, we are planning to provide shelter kits to 235 families (about 1,000people). Not only to just give the kits to the people, but also will we advise families how to repair and/or how to build shelters by using the kits. Under professional supervision, we could build up frame for shelter in 3 hours, at a work where Habitat Japan staff also participated.
