Habitat for Humanity Japan is celebrating its 20th anniversary

Beginning with Japanese volunteers building houses in Asia Pacific, Habitat Japan has worked hand in hand with volunteers and supporters for 20 years.

On November 19th, 2023, Habitat Japan will have operated for 20 years since being founded in 2003. Working to tackle housing poverty in the Asia Pacific Region, Habitat for Humanity Japan has spent the last two decades executing the Habitat mission, bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope so that everyone can have a decent place to live.

Thanks to the kind support and unwavering support of our volunteers and partners, Habitat Japan has worked to deliver support to those in need throughout devastating and unprecedented challenges posed by the Great East Japan Earthquake, the COVID-19 pandemic, and other disasters. For helping us support those in need rain or shine, we offer our heartfelt thanks to each and every supporter of Habitat Japan.

Support

Where we've been in 20 years

Habitat Japan owes its foundation to the Global Village program, with our Japan office being established to support student volunteers from Japan participating in Habitat builds overseas. Since obtaining nonprofit organization status in November of 2003, Habitat Japan has raised funds and supported volunteers and construction projects to tackle housing poverty and respond to disasters in the Asia Pacific with the help of our sister Habitat offices in the region.

When the Great East Japan Earthquake struck in 2011, Habitat Japan began our domestic housing support initiatives in earnest. Placing two offices in Iwate and Miyagi prefectures, Habitat Japan supported disaster response and subsequent rebuilding and recovery efforts for 4 years after, so that those affected could return to a safe and decent home as soon as possible. Since then, we've supported disaster response efforts for landslides in Hiroshima and the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes.

In 2017 we turned our gaze to our home neighborhoods in Tokyo and began offering move-in support and cleaning and tidying support to support the elderly and those with disabilities facing difficulties finding new homes or maintaining a safe and decent environment in the homes they have. Beginning during the COVID-19 pandemic, Habitat Japan extended domestic housing support efforts to welfare facilities like orphanages and lone mothers' shelters through facility repair and maintenance initiatives.

To our individual supporters, partner organizations, and volunteers who help make what we do possible, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

We humbly ask for the continuation of your kind support.
