Japan Hope Builders 09-1 begins the work in Bangkok! (2/26)
Japan Hope Builders started their work in Bangkok today. 17 people gathering from all over the country are going to build a house for Mrs. Pantip, who lives in Patthunthani, suburban Bangkok. Those carpenters who worked with a previous team welcomed us warmly, when we arrived at the building site. The house was under way, with pillars and roof already being assembled. After the briefing from Habitat Thailand staff, we soon started out the work.
Our first task was to prepare cement for the frame of the foundation. Team members had a hard time at the beginning, since it was their first time to make cement, but by the lunch time they progressed up to the level where they could work by themselves, without depending too much on the carpenters. Among the carpenters and the Habitat staff from Bangkok and Rayong, there was Mrs. Pantip (the house owner) and her husband who took a day off of work and came to work with us.
Here in Patthunthani, Habitat has built as many as 27 houses. Some of the neighbors came to see the site, saying "We heard that Japanese people are building a house..." Also there were people who had applied for Habitat house and been on the waiting list, as well as those who had built a house through Habitat. They all came to see how the team was working there.
We got off to a busy start, but we wrapped up the first day with pouring cement into 12 places in the frame of the foundation. Tomorrow, we will continue the work in the morning, and in the afternoon we plan to visit an elementary school where Mrs. Pantip works.
