\n\"20131125Flora<\/a>According to the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) affected the lives of more than 10 million people. 5,000 are dead and 1,600 people are still missing as of 25 November. 555,000 houses have been destroyed totally while 574,000 are partially damaged. Some 240,000 people are accommodated in the evacuation centers, however, more than 3 million are still living on the streets.Habitat for Humanity has spent the past week distributing 4,000 emergency shelter kits to families like Flora Mae Boytraugos'.
\nAfter Typhoon Haiyan ripped away two of her of home's walls and gouged holes in its tin roof, Flora and her family had to sleep sitting up to keep their faces above the water and mud that covered the concrete floor each time it rained.
\nThen, less than a week after the storm, on 14 November, Habitat for Humanity Philippines distributed 113 emergency shelter kits to the residents of her tiny island of Botongo. She and her husband, Carlos, used the kit's tarpaulins and hooks to cover their roof and form a wall.
\nWhen Habitat staff checked in on Flora's family, she said \"I am more confident now that I can sleep properly and rain won't fall in the house.\" Her voice rose, and tears formed in her eyes. It was really very much a help. Thank you for the plastic sheets. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.\"
\nA tarpaulin may not seem like much. But to Flora Mae Boytraugo, it was a precious gift.
\n\"RTX156M4.jpg\"<\/a>On Friday, 22 November, Habitat distributed the first of 30,000 shelter repair kits, which contain lumber, corrugated metal, nails, a hammer and saw in Daan Bantayan, northan part of Cebu and Guiuan in eastern part of Samar Island. These area could avoid serious damage by the high tide, but many of the houses and buildings were crushed down by the strong winds.
\nHabitat's plans also involve distributing 50,000 clean-up kits and, later, the building of new homes.
\nHow many kits Habitat can distribute and how many houses it can build depend on grants and donations. For supporting as many victims as possible, Habitat for Humanity Japan is now appealing for its disaster response efforts to help and rebuild their lives.
