Donate<\/a> and Volunteer<\/a> to Help Japan Rebuild!
\nIzushima, a small island is located 11 kilometers away from Onagawa Port, Miyagi Prefecture. Habitat Japan has been building sheds for the local fisherman's community since summer 2012 and the very last 5th shed has been completed in December.
\nLast April, Habitat Japan visited Izushima for the first time in response to request by Onagawa Town Council of Social Welfare. A resident of the island said, \"People here have made a living with fishery. But now we do not have even a place to keep the fishing equipment.\" Due to its isolated environment of the island, supports from the government and NPOs were limited. Soon later, Habitat Japan started assessment and then started to build fishermen's sheds. 4 sheds have been completed by last fall.
\n\"izushima-5thowner.jpg\"<\/a>Many residents of the island also joined building sheds. Mr. Shibutani, the landowner of 5th shed also joined the work and offered transportation for Habitat volunteers. He said, \"Thank you very much for all volunteers who came here all the way during the cold season. It is still far from the complete recovery but I want to make an effort to step forward the recovery.\" (Photo: Right)
\nIt was not the easy start because the transportation from the main land is limited after the disaster, some roads are affected by grand subsidence and flooding while there is no shop or clinic. However, total of 213 Habitat volunteers visited Izushima to build sheds from last summer to winter. Thanks to these sincere and passionate volunteers, the project was completed for those fishermen in need.
