\n\"20120724Izushima_1.jpg\"<\/a>On Izushima island, an outlying island near Onagawa in Miyagi prefecture, there is a fishing community devastated by the earthquake and tsunami last year. Habitat Japan began building fisherman's sheds to help their recovery.

\nAfter the earthquake, the population of the island dropped to less than 1\/3 of what it used to be. Most of the residents are now living in temporary housing in main land Onagawa. For the fishing industry to recover, the warehouse and workspace that are the base of the fishery there needed rebuilding. But until now, relief efforts had not reached the island, possibly because it is isolated and removed from the mainland.

\nThis time, Habitat Japan is building unit (pre-planned) sheds from a kit, because it made getting the materials to the island relatively easy, and even volunteers with no special construction skills were able to build them with the proper guidance.
\nFrom July 21st to 22nd, 12 volunteers stayed on the island and 5 locals assisted in the construction work. The work began by unloading the truck that had been packed with the building materials that were brought to the island by ferries. Then, the volunteers started the assembly, attaching metal brackets to the wood with hammers. Once the main support pillars and the floor were put up, walls and insulation were placed. It was a lot of work, but with the support of seasoned professionals, the mostly-college student volunteers and locals all pitched in and the work went smoothly. By the end of the 2 days of planned work, team had the framework for the shed finished. After installing windows and the roof, the whole structure will be painted around the middle of August.

\n\"20120724Izushima_2.jpg\"<\/a>The locals who joined the work, thinking about how they would use the shed in near future and said \"we are so happy that so many young people came out to help us. A spark of life has returned to the island\". One of the Volunteers who helped out on this outlying island, which is in a special geographic location, said \"through volunteering, we realized that there are many areas that still have not recovered after the earthquake. We'd like to come back and help more someday in the future\".

\nThe finished sheds will be the place to work, to store and also to rest for the local fishermen. Habitat is planning to build 4 sheds in total on this island.
