In June 25th, all the construction was completed and homepartners started to move into their brand new houses.

This time, families that need immediate support most among the repatriates, such as widowed during the civil war, households with elderly or disabled members were selected as homeowners. After the civil war, many of these homeowners remain trapped in temporary shelters or small barracks which do not fully protect them from heavy rains,
harmful insects, and unexpected intruder. Shelters and barracks, especially those roofs made of palm tree leaves get worn out and torn down very easily. However repatriates have very limited income and cannot afford maintenance.

In this respect, Habitat's Core House has solid foundation and structure which is made of blocks and concrete. It also has lockable doors and latticed windows, and will not cause a need for repair in approximately 10 years at least. It is one of the most appropriate housings for the vulnerable groups who are in immediate needs of protection.

Mr. and Mrs. Suburamaniyam (one of the home partners) say, "Civil war went on for years and also because of the poverty we had never lived in a decent house. Habitat's Core House is very durable and unlike shelters and barracks. We do not need to live in the half broken shelters with a lot of patches anymore. I am very happy that we can live toward a future with our own sweet home".

Mr. Vinokanth (technical advisor) says, "It was not easy to manage various carpenters and masons on construction sites to build houses precisely according to the plan. Homeowners, their families, and families from neighborhood joined the sweat equity, which contributed the construction to be completed in time. All the 15 homeowners are so happy to have their own homes. That gave me a big smile".

◆Related articles/reports
2012.06.11　Tamarind Trees Watch Over Rebuilding of Sri Lanka
2012.05.16　Homeowner Story (2)
2012.05.01　15 New Houses for the Vulnerable Group
2012.04.19　Homeowner Story (1)
2012.03.23　Dedication Ceremony for 70 New Homeowners
2011.10.12　DOORS OF HOPE: 100 Houses in Sri Lanka
2011.07.21　Stepping forward for the Future
2011.07.16　Shelter Kits Supported 1,000 People
2011.06.26　The Reality of Returning Refugees(2)
2011.06.25　The Reality of Returning Refugees
2011.06.18　Building Hope Myself: Sweat Equity in Sri Lanka
2011.05.27　[Staff Letter-1]Is An Elephant Scary !?
