Worst quake for two centuries strikes one of the world's poorest nations.<\/strong>
\n\"\"<\/a>On Tuesday 12 January at 9.53 GMT, Haiti was struck by a massive earthquake registering a magnitude of 7.0. The disaster hit 15km
\nsouth-west of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, and\u3000was imme-
\ndiately followed by two aftershocks of 5.9 and 5.5 magnitude. Destruction was widespread with tens of thousands of casualties.
\nThe huge quake came as the Haitian people were still struggling to recover from last year's violent storms which damaged or destroyed more than 50,000 homes. The local authorities have declared the country in a state of emergency and Haiti's ambassador to the U.S.
\nhas called the quake a \"catastrophe of major proportions.\"

\nThe death toll is unknown at this stage but very high: the Red Cross says that up to 3 million were killed, injured or made homeless.
\nThe collapse of well-constructed government buildings, hospitals and supermarkets means that many Haitian homes are also likely to be damaged or destroyed. Typical Haitian homes are poorly constructed with walls built from poorly-made concrete bricks, mud and stones, the roof from scrap wood and metal, and dirt floors, making them unable to withstand a natural disaster of this scale.
\nHabitat for Humanity's Response<\/strong>
\nAlthough the full toll of homes severely damaged or destroyed is not yet known, Habitat has begun to respond by addressing immediate relief efforts and long-term shelter solutions for low-income families.
