Some of these dormitories require urgent repair works to address pressing <span>needs<\/span> for better living conditions, further strained due to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Following the first phase of <span>Habitat Japan\u2019s<\/span> <span><a href=\"https:\/\/habitatjp.org\/en\/archive\/11786\">\u201cAsanagi\u201d dormitory repair project<\/a><\/span><span>,<\/span> which took place <span>from <\/span>June 2022 <span>to<\/span> May 2023, <span>we repaired <\/span>another boys\u2019 dormitory<span>, the<\/span> \u201cTaiyo\u201d<span> dormitory<\/span>. Th<span>is second<\/span> project <span>at the Home <\/span>started in July 2023 and was successfully completed in June <span>of<\/span> 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Like<span> the Asanagi dormitory project<\/span>,<span> the <\/span>Taiyo dormitory also required <span>a <\/span>complete overhaul. Prior to <span>Habitat Japan\u2019s<\/span> intervention, the dormitory <span>was <\/span>comprised <span>of <\/span>a large, communal room which was divided into several makeshift private rooms using partitions. These partitions, as well as the <span>permanent<\/span> walls and floors of the dormitory had <span>severely <\/span>deteriorated over the years, <span>creating a<\/span> poor living <span>environment<\/span> for the children. Furthermore, the makeshift rooms had also made it difficult for light reach <span>each private<\/span> the room, creating a gloomy atmosphere overall.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-photo\">\n<ul class=\"c-photo-body c-photo-body--row2\">\n<li class=\"c-photo-item\">\n<p class=\"c-photo-item__img\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/habitatjp.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/80a353064ba9499fbd99659da755e913.jpg\" class=\"lightbox\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/habitatjp.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/80a353064ba9499fbd99659da755e913-468x336.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"c-photo-item\">\n<p class=\"c-photo-item__img\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/habitatjp.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/IMG_8461-scaled.jpg\" class=\"lightbox\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/habitatjp.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/IMG_8461-468x336.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<p><span>Habitat Japan held a needs <\/span>assessment in Autumn of 2023 to identify <span>and prioritize points to improve<\/span>. Then, <span>designs and a<\/span> detailed project plan <span>were<\/span> developed <span>in partnership with<\/span> two architects, staff members of<span> the<\/span> Elizabeth Saunders Home, and Habitat staff. <span>C<\/span>onstruction commenced in April 202<span>3<\/span> <span>before being completed this June<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span>Ultimately the<\/span> project replace<span>d<\/span> flooring and wallpaper, install<span>ed<\/span> new ceiling lights, <span>repaired <\/span>window<span>s<\/span><span>, and<\/span> insta<span>lled<\/span> <span>new <\/span>air-conditioners and smoke detectors<span> in the dorm<\/span><span>.<\/span> <span>Most<\/span> importantly,<span> the project was able to build<\/span> safe and private individual rooms for children using wooden panels. <span>Finally, e<\/span>ach room was also <span>provided<\/span> with a bed, a desk, and storage cabinets, marking the end of the project 10 months in the making made possible through the help of volunteers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-photo\">\n<ul class=\"c-photo-body c-photo-body--row3\">\n<li class=\"c-photo-item\">\n<p class=\"c-photo-item__img\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/habitatjp.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240726Elizabeth-26.jpg\" class=\"lightbox\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/habitatjp.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240726Elizabeth-26-468x336.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"c-photo-item\">\n<p class=\"c-photo-item__img\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/habitatjp.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240726Elizabeth-4.jpg\" class=\"lightbox\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/habitatjp.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240726Elizabeth-4-468x336.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"c-photo-item\">\n<p class=\"c-photo-item__img\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/habitatjp.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240726Elizabeth-10.jpg\" class=\"lightbox\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/habitatjp.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240726Elizabeth-10-468x336.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>At the end of June 2024, a closing ceremony was held at the Elizabeth Saunders Home where facility staff and children joined by key supporters of the project and celebrated the completion of the two dormitory repairs. Th<span>is<\/span> project was made possible through generous fund<span>ing<\/span> from <span>our <\/span>corporate partners <span>and<\/span> <span>individual <\/span>donors <span>at <\/span>Habitat<span> Japan\u2019s<\/span> <span>2023 charity gala<\/span>.<span> We would also like to give special thanks to<\/span> corporate partners<span> that<\/span> <span>made great<\/span> contribut<span>ions<\/span> to the project <span>by<\/span><span> donating goods<\/span> and<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>by volunteering their time<\/span> <span>directly<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The Facility Repair Program is one of Habitat Japan\u2019s flagship <span>do<\/span><span>me<\/span><span>stic <\/span>programs that provides vulnerable<span> populations like children, women, and more<\/span> with decent living conditions by <span>renovating<\/span> children\u2019s homes, shelters, and other community facilities.
