Through shelter, we empower. Help us build a better life for children in Japan and Indonesia.

As we enter our third year of the Covid-19 pandemic, the needs of the vulnerable continue to increase worldwide, particularly those of women and children. In Japan, incidents of child abuse have increased over the last 30 years, with a record 200,000 cases in 2020, a dramatic rise over the previous year. Tokyo recorded 25,736 cases, the most among the country's 47 prefectures, which some experts believe is partially attributable to the pandemic. As a result, more children live in orphanages and spend most of their time indoors due to Covid mitigation measures.

The pandemic is a global issue of both hygiene and economic crises. Even before the pandemic, more than one billion people worldwide lived in slums or informal settlements, with more than half of them in South and East Asia. They are most vulnerable to the virus and the resulting economic downturn, particularly since so many live in a home lacking basic hygienic equipment and have limited access to healthcare. The pandemic has made it even more challenging to find adequate housing, which has affected children disproportionally. A decent home is essential to building a better life for children and even more so during this difficult time.
