【JPN Relief-66】 Iwate : Housing Consultations Continue

Donate and Volunteer to Help Japan Rebuild!

Ofunatoochakaiconsultation_20120731.jpgHabitat Japan continues to provide housing consultations at temporary shelters and community centers in Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture. Consultation meetings are held both in the daytime and in the evening especially for workers, and Habitat Japan staff introduce the official assistance provided by the government to rebuild houses and offer private consultations as well.

Frequently asked questions from participants are, for example, whether their houses should be moved to higher grounds, and if it is possible to move to municipal housing with special rent for the disaster survivors. Habitat Japan staff provides some solutions and guidance according to each consulter. Moreover, these gatherings open new opportunities for survivors to discuss and share various troubles each may have, and lead to build further coalition within communities.

Ofunatoconsultation_20120910.jpgOne of the most pressing matters for the tsunami-affected families is housing loans. Many of them were paying back loans but their houses were damaged and they are unable to live there now. However, in many cases, these loans are forgivable by the government's decision as long as the survivors take the necessary steps, but not many of them know about the official housing loan exemption. Habitat Japan also holds a special consultation meeting for housing loan with attorneys with the cooperation of Human Rights Now.
