【Japan Relief-53】 Iwate : House Rebuilding Consultations
In Ofunato, Iwate, we have been providing consultations about rebuilding houses for affected residents in parallel to house rehabilitation project.
Residents in Ofunato can finally picture themselves rebuilding their houses, in ways of collective relocation to higher grounds and construction of public residences. However, there is still a long list of issues to be solved for residents to feel secure, including speed of progress being different from place to place and luck of information about supporting system.
In cooperation with "Tono Magokoro Net", Habitat Japan has been visiting temporary shelters, registered temporary shelters, and local community centers, providing consultations. At these sessions, our staff explains about the current support system to match each family's damage and preferred rebuilding method. In many cases, we listen to distresses about their houses.
Many of the participants are elders who have limited access to information. It was impressive to see faces feeling relieved at consultation saying, "Because I live alone, I didn't know anything about the systems and couldn't understand anything even if I hear about them. It is very helpful to be explained which system I can use."
In addition, our assistance includes introducing lawyers and financial planners, and bringing applications together to city halls along with residents' needs. We continue to support house rebuilding by staying together with disaster victims.
