【JPN Relief-35】 Rebuilding Japan Program Goes On

Donate to Help Japan Rebuild!

On March 11, 2011, the magnitude 9.0 earthquake followed by massive tsunami struck northeastern part of Japan and took many lives away.

Habitat for Humanity has been working on disaster response in addition to house building initiatives, to meet the needs of people affected by natural disasters. Disaster response for Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 was a turning point for Habitat, and initiatives in Pakistan, China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Chili, Haiti and the United States have followed.

Last April, Habitat for Humanity International and Japan launched the Rebuilding Japan disaster response program, with a slogan of 'Let us unite our heats as one to rebuild Japan'. Having various experiences worldwide,Habitat has been operating projects in cities of Ofunato and Rikuzentakata in Iwate , and in cities of Ishinomaki, Higashimatsushima, and Onagawa in Miyagi with hundreds of volunteers and supports from donors to meet the needs on these sites.

It has been one year since the earthquake. Habitat for Humanity has been, and will keep supporting the affected families until they can return to places where they can call 'Home.' Habitat hopes that these initiatives will bring hopes for future to the affected families.

A Year after the Disaster
"What can we do for those in need?"

Ms. Natsuki Ichikawa, Students of Kyoto University of Foreign Studies, who has been joining disaster response programs from its early stagem, visited disaster areas at the beginning of the year, said there still are various issues left, and it is time to think what to do from now on.

"Some are living alone in uncomfortable temporary shelters because their houses were washed away by tsunami. Others keep living in the damaged houses without being offered any supports. I can never forget when a survivor said to me with full of tears that 'I am afraid of being forgotten and ignored one day.' Even though we live far from the disaster sites, we must not forget those in needs today. Please remember how you felt for the affected people on March 11th, 2011. Once again, this is the time to send our hearts and power to Tohoku! 'Rebuilding Japan' has just started." said Ms.Ichikawa
