【JPN Relief-33】 Miyagi : Painting Pictures of Hopes
Habitat Japan has restarted volunteer mobilization on February 11, 2012, and currently volunteers are working in several sites. In one of the sites in district of Miyato, city of Higashimatsushima, Miyagi, volunteers helped painting some containers which are used as warehouses to keep fishing equipment.
Fishing and tourism are main business of this small town. However most of the buildings, fishing boats and fishing equipment have been damaged and washed away by tsunami. Their business had to been shut down for a while. Even though having this difficult situation, they started fishing again with a few remained boats, and some of the inns are back in operation again after repair works.
Storages for fishing equipment were also washed away. They were provided with used storage containers, but those containers are tasteless and do not match the scenery. Miyato community requested Habitat Japan to paint the containers in an attractive way to revitalize the community. Mr. Kanichi Ogata, who offered his land to place a container said "I would like people to remember the peaceful seacoast where kids used to play around in summer season" and painted the picture with beach and kids on the container.
Habitat Japan is continuously working with the affected families by providing help and supporting to their urgent needs.
